Ryde Transport Interchange was designed to be used by 3 million passengers annually and is unique in terms of its modal mix – combining ferry, hovercraft, train, bus, taxi, coach, pedestrians, and cyclists – and its seafront location.
The proposal delivers a landmark building and local road re-organisation, improving overall access for all users of public transport, and creating stronger links between the Pier, Esplanade and town centre. It will also be integral to developing the tourist and recreational potential of the surrounding seafront. In partnership with Mott Macdonald, Marks Barfield used traffic modelling to test proposals for this scheme with advice on highway layout and access as part of the design. Secure by Design features include transparent façades, special lighting, and a distinctive sweeping roof form clad in glass and metal.
The interchange will have low environmental impact both in its construction method and in its ongoing use of resources. The bus concourse provides a secure and sheltered zone where passengers can wait for their buses in a similar manner to an airport lounge.
