Marks Barfield Architects were appointed by Crossrail and the engineers Connell Mott McDonald to carry out a feasibility study for Custom House station.

The work involved liasing with landowners, local and statutory authorities to design a station over the bridge of the railway lines and canopies linking the platforms to the Excel exhibition centre.
