Marks Barfield Architects were appointed by Crossrail and the engineers Connell Mott McDonald to carry out a feasibility study for Romford station.  The proposal was to refurbish and upgrade an existing station at Romford to serve Great Eastern Main Line and new Crossrail services.

The design provided an enlarged station envelope by opening up the existing ticket hall and concourse underneath existing tracks whilst providing improved station facilities ie ground floor ticketing, new MIP lifts stairs and escalators to improve station circulation and access in line with DDA requirements.

Local transport integration and interchange is improved whilst several public realm issues were addressed in the UDP, stimulating further regeneration with the town centre. The building fabric was designed to reflect the passenger demand for Crossrail in 2016 with the requirement of a principal station.
