Nine Elms to Pimlico Bridge

Location: London

Client: Wandsworth Council

Sector: Bridges and Infrastructure

Status: Competition

The London Borough of Wandsworth invited multi-disciplinary design teams from across the world to take part in a competition to produce a concept design for a new cycle and pedestrian bridge across the River Thames in London, between Nine Elms and Pimlico. The high profile contest attracted 74 entries which included designs from 'world renowned architects' and 'up-and-coming practices'.

BuroHappold Limited together with Marks Barfield Architects, J & L Gibbons Landscape Architects and Gardiner & Theobald were 1 of the 4 design teams to make it through to the second stage of the Nine Elms to Pimlico bridge competition.

The team's design solution provides an integrated and safe shared space for all users on the bridge itself, for some to linger and enjoy river views while others desire speed and directness. The bridge is a fitting addition to the riverside environment; is respectful of its setting and heritage, whilst contributing to public enjoyment of London’s great river.
